Following Successful Highway Cleanup Effort, Rep. Flood Says Litter Could be the Next Bipartisan Issue
WIND GAP – Local State Rep. Ann Flood (R-Northampton) hosted a litter cleanup event on Saturday, Nov. 20, and – following a recent announcement by the governor – says beautification projects could offer the next opportunity for bipartisan cooperation between various levels of government.

“Cleaning our communities should be an issue that brings us together regardless of political philosophy or party affiliation,” Flood said. “We all want to live in a clean community.”

Flood and Bethlehem Township Commissioner John Merhottein hosted a roadside cleanup event on Saturday from approximately 10 a.m. to noon along eastbound Route 22 at the onramp and offramp at the Route 191 exit.

Flood and Merhottein worked together with Melenese Sivells and several other volunteers from Jack and Jill of America Inc. to pick up approximately 30 bags of trash. Bethlehem Township Commissioner John Gallagher also was part of the initiative.

Two days later, Gov. Tom Wolf on Monday released his first-ever litter action plan and called for statewide action on the issue. More information is available at Governor.Pa.Gov/Newsroom/Wolf-Administration-Releases-First-Ever-Litter-Action-Plan-Calls-For-Action-Statewide.

“This is an opportunity to come together, clean up our environment, improve the quality of life for residents and enhance civic pride in our communities,” Flood said. “I want to encourage people to get involved and stay involved in the ongoing effort to clean our communities by picking up litter. Whether its through formal events like this or simply picking something up and throwing it in the trash can, we all have a part to play in keeping Pennsylvania beautiful.”

Flood and Merhottein hosted their event as part of the Pick Up PA initiative, which is part of the larger Keep PA Beautiful program. More information about Pick Up PA is available at
